To Uncover Multicultural Psychological Aspects/Phenomena of (Mathematics) Education

Each country has different way to teach Mathematics to students. The method that be used are very diverse. The method of teaching is depends on the capabilities and readiness of students. Many experts do research to find the best method to teach students and to find the problem of study.
There are many conferences that be held to discuss about problem of mathematics teaching or development of teaching method and development of science. One of them is APEC-UBON Ratchatani International Symposium 2011 that be held in Thailand on 2-5 November 2011 with theme Innovation on Problem Solving - Based Mathematics Textbooks and E-Textbooks.There are many experts that presented their paper about mathematics education.
One of the invited speakers that presented his paper is Mr. Marsigit from Indonesia. He presented about teachers’ simulation on developing problem solving-based mathematics textbook in vocational senior high school mathematics teaching in Indonesia. Prof. Vivotsky from Russia present about how are the theorem of probability learning in junior high school. Prof. Udit from Thailand presented about modeling problem solving.
There is open class in one section on that conference and mathematics seminary. In the open class, students of first grade requested to calculating using models and looked by all audience of conferences. They divided into some group. The students in each group have to calculate how many dragonfly that contains in the paper. The first is makes the students feel comfort and enjoy. They can do anything on that class. Even the students enjoy with the process of study, but they more difficult to calculating the dragonfly.
Teaching aid like replica of dragonfly be expected to make students more understand about calculating because students get real experience to calculating something. They calculating real thing, not abstract and just on their mind. But in fact, students feel difficult to count it. After using dragonfly’s models, the teachers using cube to count the sum of dragonfly in the paper. Students take the cubes on the dragonfly’s models and calculating how many cubes that cover the dragonfly.
In the conference Profesot Shizumi Shimizu explained about principle of mathematics activities carried out as problem solving. They are a sequence starting with:
a. Generating wonder and question; students is given inducement about problem of mathematics, they will curious and wonder about the problem. In the process to find the answer will arise some question about it.
b. Formulating problems by formalizing them; students asked to the teachers.
c. Understanding the problems.
d. Planning.
e. Implementing; this dealing with counting process.
f. Reflecting on solution process; students are requested to forward in front of class and present the results.
That more important after students found the answer of the problems is end of a problem solving must be start for next challenge. Students will get motivation to do some problems that more difficult than before. They have completed the competencies required to solve the problem and will find the other problems that will complete the others competencies.
Professor Ishoda Masami as an invited speaker presented about three big problems in mathematics education. Those three big problems are:
a. The challenge of integrating students’ perspective into teaching practices.
b. The gap between theories /research and practice.
c The lack of learning theories on teacher and education.
With the APEC-UBON Ratchatani International Symposium 2011 be expected that quality of mathematics education will be increase. All the problems about education that presented by invited speaker can be solved well. As candidates of mathematics teachers, we have to know about problems in mathematics education and find the way to solve the problems. So we can teach mathematics well and students can enjoy with mathematics.

In some countries, calculators are one of the important things in teaching learning process for Mathematics learning. This is shown with used of calculators from elementary school until senior high school. They used calculators to make visualization figure of the graph. So they will know the real figure of the function. Besides that, calculator used to make easier in counting. The students usually used scientific calculators because it easy to operate Mathematics with it. One of the scientific calculators is graph calculators. Graph calculators has feature to show the result of Mathematics problem faster and equipped with its graph. The other superiority of graph calculator is to make program that can solve Mathematics problem.
The students in SMK Muhammadiyah IV Yogyakarta have responds positive with used of calculators. With calculator they can solve Mathematics problem easily and more interested than before. But there are some constraints to used calculators. Sometimes, students difficult to understand the question that will be enter to calculators. They feel difficult to enter data in calculators. They feel difficult to interpret, analyze and make conclusion with the result of calculators. So, they should ask to their teachers.
Using calculators have many benefits, but there are bad effects to students too. Students become lazy to find the result manually. Students are too dependent on the use of calculators. Sometimes, uses of calculators are good and sometimes it can be make students become lazy to find the results by themselves.

“USAHA GURU” DALAM MENINGKATKAN MINAT SISWA MEMPELAJARI MATEMATIKA

To teach mathematics is not easy. There are some students that have opinion that mathematics is difficult. Besides that, students are not easy to learn mathematics too. There are some models and some methods that can help teachers to teaching mathematics. The method such as exposition method, discussion method, problem solving method, investigate method, and soon. But, to apply the methods, teachers have some constrained, such as lack of understanding of the subject, how to apply that, the facilities and the system.
Commonly, the teachers feel difficult to cover the differences of ability of student learn mathematics, to give motivation to makes students more active, and to develop learning technologies. Sometimes, to get the best mark for the students, teacher used explanation method. Teachers just give and direct.
If teachers only use explanation method, the students will depend on teacher’s explanation. They will not be active and find the concept by themselves. The ability of students will difficult to be developed. Teachers should make mathematics attractive for students. First step, teachers should make students feel comfort with mathematics. Teachers should built good communication with students. Give description about the nature of students learn mathematics. Teachers as facilitator for the students. To get more information, students should find it by themselves and sometimes collaborate with their friends. But teachers did not immediately release their students. Teacher should give evaluation, how deep students know about the subject. The important thing is the process of students finds the true answer by their own ways. Let the students’ explorer their ability in the subject by themselves.

Sometimes, students feel difficult to study. Otherwise, teachers feel difficult to change their teaching method. Meanwhile, as teachers, we should follow the changing time. There are four views about how learning should be, such as: content focus-conceptual understanding, content focus-performance, learner focus-construction, and classroom focus-effective classroom. To make a change, teachers should be a part of innovation.
The curriculum that applied should support teachers do innovation. Competency-based education (Curriculum 2004) has now become alternative to conducting an emphasis on learning capabilities that should be possessed by graduates. The curriculum developed based on the elaboration of standards of competence to be basic skills.
Besides that, to make students feel comfort to study mathematics, teacher should change the paradigm of teaching learning process, from traditional learning to progressive learning. It should be change from teacher domination to students’ domination. The students will be more active to find information about the material. They can be more active to ask and find the concept with their own ways. Teachers become facilitators only.
With the new concept of teaching learning, maybe can make students feel worried. Especially for students that not active, and with the new method they prosecuted to be more active. For the beginning, it can makes they feel uncomforted. For this situation, the teacher should give guidance for the students. Slowly but sure, they will be accustomed with the new method. Teachers should create situations in the classroom to be fun to learn. Thus students will get excited and motivated to continue learning.

HELPING TEACHER TO DEVELOP MODEL FOR SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHING: Action Research of Indonesian Secondary Mathematics Teaching

Berdasarkan penelitian, pada umumnya cara mengajar guru disekolah menengah atas menggunakan metode eksposisi (menjelaskan). Penjelasannya secara formal dan klasikal. Guru menjelaskan tentang konsep-konsep dasar, kemudian memberi contoh, latihan dan tugas. Dengan metode ini, tentu siswa tidak dapat mengembangkan kemampuan mereka secara maksimal dalam mata pelajaran tersebut karena mereka terbiasa dituntun atau diberi. Mereka tidak terbiasa mencari sendiri konsepnya. Dari hasil penelitian, didapatkan hasil bahwa guru ternyata mengalami kesulitan dalam menguasai kompetensi penting dalam bidang akademik dan mempromosikan agar siswa lebih aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar.
Salah satu cara mengatasi masalah ini adalah dengan melibatkan guru dalam melakukan penelitian tindakan sehingga guru-guru dapat mengembangkan model pembelajarannya sendiri. Model pembelajaran yang dapat membuat siswa lebih aktif dan tidak hanya berorientasi pada hasil, tapi juga pada proses.
Selain itu, pemerintah juga harus meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan dengan memberi prioritas lebih dalam bidang pendidikan. Peningkatan kualitas pendidikan ini tentu harus dibarengi dengan peningkatan kualitas tenaga pengajarnya. Pengembangan kualitas tenaga pengajar atau guru merupakan hal mendasar untuk pengembangan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia.
Perubahan cara mengajar dan mengatasi kesulitan dalam mengajar tentu bukan perkara mudah. Dari memberikan penjelasan mengenai suatu materi berubah menjadi fasilitator bagi siswanya, awalnya mungkin terasa sedikit kaget dan tidak biasa. Selain itu, akan ada banyak tekanan yang dialami oleh guru. Namun, ini justru akan menjadi tantangan tersendiri dalam peningkatan dan pengembangan kualitas atau mutu guru tersebut. Siswa dan sekolah pun seharusnya turut membantu menyukseskan model pembelajaran yang diterapkan oleh guru, sehingga tujuan yang diinginkan dapat tercapai.

There are some problems to teaching mathematics in school. One of them is because some teacher still using traditional method. The traditional method can’t develop the potential of students. Then, researcher makes some research to develop the method. Method that be developed are exposition method, discussion method, exercise and giving task method, research method, problem solving method, and teaching aid. All of the method can help students develop their ability in Mathematics.
There are some attempts that teachers can do, such as develop Students Worksheet (LKS), make group of study, develop discussion method, and develop teaching aid. Teachers can’t work by themselves to develop ability of their students. The students, school, headmaster, and government should support the attempts of teachers to develop new method to explore students’ ability in Mathematics.
However, to change the method that used by teacher from traditional method to constructivism method is not easy. It’s like habit, and rather difficult to change. The teachers need training and understanding, so that they can accept it better. For the beginning, maybe the teachers can use this method, but it is not for long time. The teachers will back to traditional method because it easier to applied than use constructivism method. Choose the easier ways is human usually do. The teachers need modals. The modal is will (willingness). Teachers need support and motivation from students, school, and government too. All of schools aspects should cooperation and adaptation with the new method, so teaching learning process can runs well.
